Starfish: a solo exhibition by Sarah Thibault

About the exhibition

Royal NoneSuch Gallery presents Starfish, a solo exhibition of five new large-scale oil paintings by Sarah Thibault. The title, Starfish, refers to the slang phrase, “to starfish,” which Urban Dictionary defines as “the act of spreading one’s body out in bed, each limb and the head creating the 5 points of a star like a starfish.”  The exhibition aims to articulate and magnify female and femme experiences, and allow those perspectives to take up space in the gallery.

In the spirit of movements like the Women’s March and #metoo, these large-scale paintings are meant to combat the continued assaults on the female, femme and non-binary body by the government, the media and patriarchal culture. The five paintings, one for each point of the starfish, are based on Thibault’s height—using that measurement as the smallest dimension. The use of the first-person point of view, and the orange and pink color palette of salt lamps prioritize a feminine perspective that is intimate yet expansive .

Artist Bio

Sarah Thibault is an artist living and working in San Francisco. Selected exhibitions include projects with Interface Gallery, HILDE Gallery, Steve Turner Contemporary, Mark Wolf Contemporary and ART in Embassies. Thibault and her work has been featured in Artsy, CARLA, The San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Magazine, SFAQ, The Examiner, The Huffington Post, and 7x7. Thibault is the Founder of the online publication Artists + Travel and the co-director of The Painting Salon, a nomadic lecture series featuring monthly artist talks in the Bay Area.  She is also a Charter Resident of the Minnesota Street Project studios. She holds an MFA from the California College of the Arts, a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and a BA from the University of Wisconsin- Madison.
